Misunderstood, Not Neglectful

Stella is a mother whose life has always revolved around her son. He is her world, her responsibility, and her greatest motivation.

In August 2025, her life took an unexpected turn when she was arrested on allegations of child neglect. She was remanded, separated from her son, and left to navigate a system she did not understand. Inside prison, time moved slowly. Stella watched other women visit the Justice Nest office and return with renewed hope. Some went home. Others had their cases reduced. Still, she stayed away. She believed no one could help her. She thought her situation was hopeless.

But over time, something began to shift. Listening to the stories of other women, she started to believe that maybe her story could also change. After months of silence, she finally gathered the courage to seek help.

When Stella shared her story, it became clear that her situation had been shaped by misunderstanding rather than neglect. A disagreement with a neighbour had escalated over time, rooted in everyday tensions. On the day everything changed, her son had fallen ill. She rushed him to a clinic, where he was diagnosed with malaria and given medication.

She took him home, ensured he was comfortable, and gave him the prescribed treatment. As a single mother, she depended entirely on her daily work to provide for him. When she was unable to reach her employer by phone, she stepped out briefly to inform them in person, worried about losing her only source of income. During that short absence, a report was made accusing her of neglecting her sick child. That report led to her arrest.

With support from Justice Nest Prison Paralegal Program team, Stella was guided through the process of presenting her case. She gathered medical records, school documents, and proof of consistent financial support for her son. These were presented in court as part of her mitigation. After seven months in custody, Stella was released. The moment she walked free; her relief was unmistakable. She was going home to her son.

Stella's case is not unique; many more mothers are going through the same experience. Today, she is rebuilding her life with renewed hope. This is not just about a legal outcome; it is about a mother who never stopped caring, even when circumstances suggested otherwise. It is about the power of second chances and the importance of timely legal support. At Justice Nest, we continue to support cases like these.
