In a Moment of Global Attention: Salim’s Release Shows Justice Nest’s Impact on the Ground

With global conversations around access to justice gaining renewed attention, including recent features on our prisons, we are reminded that powerful stories of resilience and second chances are happening every day here in Kenya through the work of Justice Nest.

Earlier this month, Salim, a tall and gentle man despite his heavy burdens, walked into our office overwhelmed with despair. He had been convicted of robbery with violence and sentenced to 25 years in prison, a crime he consistently stated he did not commit. Though he had already filed an appeal, he felt lost, stressed, and uncertain about what would happen next. Our team assured him that his story was not over.

Our paralegal Mr. Mwinyi Heri Jeffa  took up his case immediately, beginning with a review of the appeal at the Garsen High Court. Once the trial proceedings were obtained and examined, Jeffa identified several strong grounds that challenged the safety of the conviction. He prepared and filed detailed submissions for Salim’s appeal. When the High Court heard the matter, it became clear that the prosecution’s evidence was insufficient. Khalid was acquitted.

Twelve days later, on 24th November 2025, Salim walked out of prison a free man. He returned to our office visibly shaking, overwhelmed by the reality of his freedom. Speaking to one of our paralegals Mr. Moses Mubia, he said:

“Of all the twenty five years I’ve lived on this earth, I’ve never been happy the way I am today. It still does not register clearly in my mind that I am free. That I am no longer a slave. It is still difficult to believe. Justice Nest people are miracle workers. Thank you very much. Am now heading home in Lamu county.I hope and pray that Allah will reward you more”

As global audiences pay attention to the importance of fair representation and humane justice systems, we are proud that here at home, Justice Nest continues to stand with individuals like Khalid, offering support, dignity, and a pathway back to hope.
